TIME IN COPENHAGEN

My week in Copenhagen, Denmark was awesome! So many incredible views, delicious restaurants and fun activities to take part in. With every trip in a new city, there are many highlights, although there are some downfalls (nowhere is perfect) I would say that Copenhagen rises up and is one of my favourite trips I’ve taken.

On my very first day in the city, we went for a walk, to discover the area and see where the city takes us. Needless to say, our hotel had an incredible location, because just around the corner were the famous coloured houses, and minutes from there was Amagertorv. Amagertorv is part of the Street pedestrian zone, and is known to be the central square in downtown Copenhagen. The path leads you down several streets of shops, cafés and restaurants. You could (and I surely did) get lost in the maze of it all, but happily wander for hours.

When I was doing my research, which I highly recommend you do before visiting any new place, I made a list of several places I wanted to go. Among some of these spots were the Round Tower, the Botanical Gardens and Christiania. The Round Tower is both a lovely piece of architecture, and a lookout point, from which you can see above all of Copenhagen. The Botanical Gardens are a lovely place to take a leisurely walk, have a seat with a view and grab a cup of coffee. Deep within the gardens is the conservatory. The various rooms filled with green plants and trees serve as a backdrop to the two white spiral staircases that are both visually fantastic, and actually allow you to walk around the very top of the conservatory. My only warning, it is humid in there! Finally, Christiania is such a special place in the heart of Copenhagen. For generations, the people of this “village” have lived outside the Danish government, allowed by the country to live within their own laws. The citizens have created their own society, farming, producing, and maintaining all that they need to keep their community going. Furthermore, much of what would be ruled illegal by Danish law, is in fact legal within the gates of Christiania - foremost being the production and sales of various recreational drugs. So of course, not a place to take the family, but a good time for a group of friends, haha. It is also an unwritten rule that inside the walls of Christiania, no one is to take any pictures, keeping the mystery ( and discretion) alive and well.

I did end up going to all three of these destinations, and had a wonderful time at each. Having a destination each day is nice, because it gives the trip some structure, but I am always one who loves the freedom found within the journey to getting there. We took electric scooters provided by the city and found on almost every corner, and sped down the streets, the breeze flowing and the stunning cityscape everywhere to be discovered.

Now the food! My research served me well because the restaurants I went to were brilliant. I am someone with a lot of dietary restrictions, so I always need to look at menus in advance to eating out. I was super happy to find that there were multiple places in Copenhagen that i could visit, and not only be able to eat there, but even have some options to choose from. If you are following a plant-based, vegetarian, vegan, or Mediterranean diet, here is a list of great restaurants for you to try in Copenhagen:

Here is my advice if you would like to visit Copenhagen (which I very much encourage because it is such an amazing place!). If you go in the Fall or Winter, bring layers - it is chilly. I would also advise you to be smart with how you spend. Copenhagen is a very expensive city, but there are ways you can be smart with your money and not come home to a crazy credit card bill. One way I would suggest is to grocery shop, do not eat every meal at a restaurant because that could break the bank. Another way to save is to go at it on foot! It is the perfect city to walk around. If you do want/need transportation, definitely rent out one of the electric scooters, you will not be disappointed. The city’s infrastructure is built for bikes and scooters, so you will notably get places faster, you will also save yourself from a hefty taxi bill.

I loved my time in Copenhagen, and I look forward to definitely going back!
